Variations on an Old Fashioned
Italian and American go together in realms other than the sartorial. I’m a big fan of bourbon (or rye, as in the top photo above) and bitters in the many forms that combo may take. These two are among my favorites.
Aperol is very similar in its bitter citrus notes to Campari, but is decidedly less alcoholic. Cynar is a dark and intensely herbal elixir made from a number of herbs and plants, predominant among them the artichoke, or cynara scardunculus, giving this Amaro (Italian for “bitter”) liqueur its name.
