I’m certainly no hip-hop head, but Nas’ Illmatic (1994) is one of my favorite—and I think one of the best—albums of all time, period. I was a junior in high school when it came out, on the same day as Shyheim’s AKA the Rugged Child, and I had a friend who thought Shyheim’s album the better one. It was, as people now say, LOLS.
