Don’t be Afraid to Thrift and/or Buy Used Shoes: They’re Not All Nasty
Some of my finer shoes. All were either made in the USA or England. 9 pairs were thrifted or bought at estate sales, none for more than $17—the Walk-Over suede derbys were $14.50, and the shell cordovan Florsheim Royal Imperial longwings were $17.
The Allen Edmonds Park Avenues in the front row were only $4 and looked like they’d probably been worn once or twice. The Tricker’s boots were $70, but I bought out the store at that price and flipped a bunch on ebay, which more than covered all of the shoes seen here. 2 pairs were bought from StyleForum members, neither for over $60.
If you are choosey, and assiduous in your search, you can find well-made shoes at very affordable prices. Sure, the majority of shoes you find at thrift shops will be ones you’d never wear, but sometimes—as with the AE Park Avenues—someone might have donated them because of a tiny scuff, and they could probably afford to just go out and buy a new pair…
Brands shown here that you should keep your eyes out for: Allen Edmonds, Royal Tweed (by Church’s), Johnston and Murphy Crown Aristocraft, Florsheim Royal Imperial, Cole Haan made in USA, Walk-Over, Cable Car Clothiers (probably made for them in England), and Tricker’s. Out of these brands, the ones you’ll find most often while thrifting are Allen Edmonds, Cole Haan, Johnston and Murphy (less often their Crown Aristocraft line), and Florsheim Royal Imperial. Good luck!
